Students Wanted for Legislative Cookie Day!

This event marks the 21st year that Bates students have visited the state Capitol during the legislative session to deliver cookies with a message about the importance of two-year colleges!  Students travel down by bus to Olympia (leaving 7:30am, returning Noon—time approximate) to distribute chocolate chip cookies baked by our culinary arts program; and to share their stories of what technical education means to them and how investing in technical education supports the economic turnaround in Washington State.  The college delegation takes part in personal legislative visits, as well as delivers cookies to everyone at the state Capitol!

If you are interested in being part of this annual event or learning more, please contact Mary Moseley in the communications office at 253.680.7124 or mmoseley@bates.ctc.edu with the legislative district you live in.

Library News

The libraries close for Winter Break on Friday 12/19/14.  The doors will be locked but… you don’t have to be in the library to be using the library!   Bates Library staff will respond to email and phone when they are present (or you can contact the AskWA service to chat with staff at other libraries) and there are several online databases that are available 24/7.  The Libraries will re-open when classes resume on January 2nd, 2015.

CultureGrams is just one of the databases you can access online through the Bates Library.  This resource includes short, reliable reports on over 180 cultures from around the world… including details about what holidays they celebrate.  A brief search just now discovered that, in Russia, the final day of Maslenitsa is celebrated by burning an effigy of winter to symbolize sending the cold season away until next year.

IT News for Students

Recently, Google made changes to their Chrome browser, starting with version 37 which changed the way it handles certain code in websites. Unfortunately, this affected how Outlook Web Access (OWA) operates in Chrome. File attachment and copy/paste of URLs to the body of messages are a couple of the issues that have been identified. Google has not indicated they plan to resolve this for users so if you need to check your Bates email from OWA, please use another browser like Internet Explorer. Student Help Line (253) 680-7055.
