Governor Jay Inslee recently signed a proclamation designating October as Filipino American  History Month. Pierce County is home to the state’s largest Filipino American population and on the next Northwest Now, host Tom Layson takes a closer look at their historical and cultural contributions, and their sacrifices to our country.

We’ll also discuss the struggles that the Filipino population faces when it comes to being recognized for those efforts, and the struggles to keep their culture alive in younger generations.

“So many of our children have never been to the native countries because they were born here, they don’t speak the language and don’t understand the language,” said Albert Cosio, Secretary of the Asia Pacific Cultural Center.

Northwest Now is a weekly public affairs program that airs Friday at 7:30 p.m. on KBTC.
