SPOTLIGHT on Culinary Arts instructor Roger Knapp. Knapp has been a Bates faculty member for 23 years.

  1. Where do you find inspiration each day?

Inspiration comes to me in many different ways, from watching students perform in class and seeing their skills progress, to seeing them graduate and become successful in their chosen area of the industry.

Also, watching the industry change and develop with new techniques is inspiring and gives me new information to take back to the classroom. And, other times, inspiration comes from doing something as simple as going for an afternoon walk.

  1. What is the best part of being a Bates Technical College faculty member?

Being able to address the needs of students and help them grow in the culinary industry is a wonderful part of being a faculty member. Also, it is an exciting time to be at Bates because of the growth we are currently experiencing. The college is adapting to the needs of the community, industry and world around us.

Understanding the quote: “The most important part of business walks through the front door every day,” is an important part of being a Bates faculty member.

  1. If you could have dinner with one person, living or dead, who would that be and why?

The first person I would have dinner with is Leonardo da Vinci–but, I would do the cooking.

They say: “Leonardo’s curiosity and insatiable hunger for knowledge never left him. He was constantly observing, experimenting and inventing, and drawing was for him a tool for recording his investigation of nature.” Wouldn’t you love to talk to him about that!
