The number of deadly shootings involving a mentally-disturbed person who somehow managed to get their hands on a gun, seem to rise higher every year.

In this edition of KBTC’s public affairs program Northwest Now, host Tom Layson takes a closer look at I-1491, a ballot initiative that, if passed, would give law enforcement the power to take guns out of the hands of someone who may turn violent. But, is this a violation of second amendment rights and due process?

We’ll hear from both sides of the argument.

“What we really want to do is be sure that we’re using common sense solutions,” Representative Laurie Jinkins (D) Tacoma told Layson. “And I think this bill is particularly important, because we know that family members frequently know what’s happening long before anyone else knows what’s happening, and we want to give family members the tools to intervene to keep their family members safe–and to keep other people safe.”

gunThe Emmy and Telly Award-winning public affairs series Northwest Now airs Fridays at 7:30 p.m. on KBTC Public Television, a service of Bates Technical College.
