It’s difficult enough to deal with the emotional pain of watching a loved one’s health deteriorate into the final days of life. But that pain gets deeper for some who, because of current guardianship laws, are unable to be at the bedside of a dying beloved family member.

On the next Northwest Now, we take a closer look at state efforts to change guardianship and visitation laws. Host Tom Layson will talk with Keri Kasem, whose stepmother kept her from visiting Keri’s dying father, radio legend Casey Kasem, as the disc jockey rested at a Gig Harbor home during the final days of his life.

Kasem told host Layson,”You can have a court-appointed guardian or care taker … sign everything over to them, including knocking you out of visitation completely…Get your POA (power of attorney), if you cannot afford to get your will and estate plans together,” she said.

Plus, we’ll hear from lawmakers who are trying to make it so this doesn’t happen anymore to family members who want visitation rights to be at the bedside of dying loved ones.
