Three of the state’s seven charter schools will open right here in Tacoma next month.  On the next Northwest Now, we’ll take a closer look at these new schools and find out what they could mean for the future of public education.

We’ll talk to Kristin Bellamy-Mclain, founder of Tacoma’s SOAR Academy. We’ll also hear from Gina Wickstead, executive director of Summit Public School, and we’ll chat with Tacoma Middle School Principal and director of Green Dot Public Schools Genny Cadena, who says it takes plenty of community outreach to get out the facts about charter schools.

“A lot of people generally don’t know what we’re about, and so it’s just getting out into the community and creating these general relationships and with the families and allowing them to get to know what we’re about,” says Cadena.
